**** SECTION 3 - HAZARDS IDENTIFICATION ****
EMERGENCY OVERVIEW
Contact with water liberates highly flammable gases. Spontaneously
flammable in air.Water-Reactive.
Potential Health Effects
Eye:
Dust may cause mechanical irritation.
Skin:
Dust may cause mechanical irritation. Particles embedded in the skin
may cause "chemical gas gangrene" with symptoms of persistent
lesions, inflammation and gas bubbles under the skin.
Ingestion:
May cause irritation of the digestive tract. Low hazard for usual
industrial handling.
Inhalation:
May cause respiratory tract irritation. Inhalation of fumes may
cause metal fume fever, which is characterized by flu-like symptoms
with metallic taste, fever, chills, cough, weakness, chest pain,
muscle pain and increased white blood cell count.
Chronic:
No information found.
**** SECTION 4 - FIRST AID MEASURES ****
Eyes:
Immediately flush eyes with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes,
occasionally lifting the upper and lower eyelids. Get medical aid.
Skin:
Get medical aid. Immediately flush skin with plenty of soap and
water for at least 15 minutes while removing contaminated clothing
and shoes.
Ingestion:
If victim is conscious and alert, give 2-4 cupfuls of milk or water.
Get medical aid immediately.
Inhalation:
Remove from exposure to fresh air immediately. If not breathing,
give artificial respiration. If breathing is difficult, give oxygen.
Get medical aid.
Notes to Physician:
Antidote:
The use of Dimercaprol or BAL (British Anti-Lewisite) as a chelating
agent should be determined by qualified medical personnel.
**** SECTION 5 - FIRE FIGHTING MEASURES ****
General Information:
As in any fire, wear a self-contained breathing apparatus in
pressure-demand, MSHA/NIOSH (approved or equivalent), and full
protective gear. Flammable solid. May react with acids or moisture
to form explosive hydrogen gas.
Extinguishing Media:
Use only graphite powder, soda ash, powdered sodium chloride, or an
appropriate metal-fire-extinguishing dry powder. Do NOT use water,
carbon dioxide, or foam.
**** SECTION 6 - ACCIDENTAL RELEASE MEASURES ****
General Information: Use proper personal protective equipment as indicated
in Section 8.
Spills/Leaks:
Scoop up with a nonsparking tool, then place into a suitable
container for disposal. Remove all sources of ignition.
**** SECTION 7 - HANDLING and STORAGE ****
Handling:
Wash thoroughly after handling. Remove contaminated clothing and
wash before reuse. Use with adequate ventilation. Ground and bond
containers when transferring material. Use spark-proof tools and
explosion proof equipment. Avoid contact with eyes, skin, and
clothing. Empty containers retain product residue, (liquid and/or
vapor), and can be dangerous. Avoid ingestion and inhalation. Do not
pressurize, cut, weld, braze, solder, drill, grind, or expose empty
containers to heat, sparks or open flames.
Storage:
Keep away from sources of ignition. Store in a tightly closed
container. Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area away from
incompatible substances.
**** SECTION 8 - EXPOSURE CONTROLS, PERSONAL PROTECTION ****
Engineering Controls:
Use adequate ventilation to keep airborne concentrations low.
Personal Protective Equipment
Eyes:
Wear chemical goggles and face shield.
Skin:
Wear impervious gloves.
Clothing:
Wear appropriate protective clothing to prevent skin
exposure.
Respirators:
Follow the OSHA respirator regulations found in 29CFR
1910.134 or European Standard EN 149. Always use a
NIOSH or European Standard EN 149 approved respirator
when necessary.
